Attending The Brits School for Performing Art Croydon.
My name is Nathan Rushmer and I have just completed my first year at The BRIT School, which is an independently run performing arts school, studying Technical Theatre Arts. It has been a fun packed, fast paced, enjoyable start to my two-year course, which has taken me into several different theatres across London looking at and studying ‘Lighting and Sound.’ This is the area in which I would like to specialize and hopefully further develop into other areas of theatre life, including stage management and set design. This will give me a bigger insight and experience of the theatre world.
As a team of students, we have put on several productions over the year, which include Legally Blonde and Romeo & Juliet. These productions are prepared to industry standard by the students, as ticket sales, along with sponsorship and donations go towards the running of the school.
I was given the opportunity to attend the BRIT Awards earlier this year and extremely lucky to be awarded with a ticket to the ‘red carpet’ prior to the award ceremony as I had 100% attendance. I was star-struck as I watched all the performers arrive and got to have a chat with many of them.
With the financial help I received from the Old Wandsworthians Memorial Trust, I was able to purchase all of the safety equipment and protective clothing needed to work within the theatre environment. It also helped pay for my train travel expenses and ad hoc trips into London over the year.
I am very excited and looking forward to starting my second year of study at the BRIT school, which will be more of an apprenticeship where I will have the opportunity to work in some of London’s biggest West End Theatres, thank you to everyone at The Old Wandsworthians for assisting me in making my first year at BRIT School a memorable one.
Thanks – Nathan Rushmer
