A Message from Les Herbert, 2019

Hello to all Old Wandsworthians, once more the time has come for me to put pen to paper!

But before I proceed, I would like pass on our condolences to all the families of former Old Wandsworthians, who sadly left us this year: Mr Peter Richard-Jones (Teacher) Ken Dore, Ray Pritchard and John Bourton (Teacher). These are the names I have been informed about.

We started 2019 off with our annual gathering of (Old Lags), here once again we had over 130 former pupils and rugby club members attend the Dave Pollard Memorial Lunch. It was great to see so many old mates meeting up and having a good time. Please spread the word to any other former pupils you might know? Our next gathering is taking place next year on February 8th, where we will be watching Scotland vs England KO 16:45 but our proceedings start around 13:00 at the bar. Come and join us and have some fun, the Trust covers all food cost and table wine!

We held our annual Service of Remembrance on the 8th November, at St Cecilia’s School. This was my first year I did not attend and I would like to thank Peter Heard for his support. Peter led the event on behalf of the Trust, and was supported by a special guest, who many of you may know, Commander Robert Hawkins MBE Royal Navy. He gave a short talk to over 100 year 7 pupils about the role of the armed forces. Bob attended the School in 1971–1978, “thank you Bob” for your support and talk at the service. The pupils enjoyed your talk and the school informed me they would like you back again. We think they like a man in uniform!! We will be announcing next year’s Service of Remembrance date early in 2020.

We now have 500 former pupils on our records and although sadly some are leaving us, we are also picking up more each year. Please pass on the word about the OWMT and if you know any former pupils, please get them to send us their details. PLUS, please send me any changes to your details, (if you have an email address and the NEWS LETTER ARRIVES BY ROYAL MAIL, please send me your email address).

Please remember apart from holding annual events, we do support many young people for educational qualifications and trips. The grant applications can be found in the Download section. Over the years most applications have been awarded to the children of former Old Wandsworthians. The Trust is also now considering supporting applications for grandchildren. All applications are sent to me, Les Herbert, details are on the form.

I would like to thank Andy Archer, who has produced this years News Letter for the Trust. Thank you to all the Trustees, for their continued support and hard work they all put into keeping the Old Wandsworthians Memorial Trust alive. Last but not least, thank “YOU’ for attending and supporting the Trust’s events. The aim is primarily about the memory of the fallen, but it is also about the future and the support we give to many young people and the relationship we have with Saint Cecilia’s School. Finally, on behalf of all the Trustees, we wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a Healthy & Happy New year.

Best wishes

Les Herbert (Secretary OWMT)
